….and while I’m up here on the soapbox

Let’s hear it for Iowa Supreme Court justices who were forced to hear arguments upholding Iowa’s law limiting marriage to a man and a woman….According to the Des Moines Register, the oral argument to uphold the law was simply that to allow persons of the same sex to marry will discourage heterosexual couples from wanting to marry.  OH PLEASE…..

The article goes on to say that more than one justice observed that the state of Iowa has approved no-fault divorce, it allows convicted felons, sex offenders, deadbeat dads and prison inmates to marry and it currently allows gay and lesbian folks to adopt children or to be foster parents.

This is not a constitutional law question…this is politics …as I have said before…us heterosexuals have certainly done a bang up job with marriage…maybe there is a fear that gay and lesbian couples will make us look bad.  Is it true that sperm donars and perverts have more rights in the marriage institution than two people who want to commit to one another and are like us in every way except for their sexual preference in the privacy of their own bedroom.  Somebody get me a rainbow flag…I want to march in their parade!

  3. The reasons that they give not to allow marriages for gay couples are ridiculous.  I have been hearing that if we can’t get it right our kids generation will.  They are so much more open and relaxed about sexual orientation.   I never remember openly gay kids at high school and yet at Erik’s old high school there were.  I think it will change but this kind of change is slow.

  4. How can encouraging more love and commitment discourage hetero marriage?  The deep dark secret and what they don’t want to say is that many homosexuals are in hetero sham marriages.

  5. What used to make W and I nuts before we were married and before MA allowed same sex marriage – the “civil union” laws that allowed for same sex couples to have family health coverage and other protections – while not married.  What about the same thing for hetero couples who are together for a long time in a committed relationship who DON’T WANT TO marry?  That was unfair. We, at the time, didn’t want to be married – yet we knew we would be together, but as a hetero couple neither of us had estate rights to the other, health care decision rights and we had to keep two health policies going too.   It’s unfair all the way around – everyone should be able to get married, divorced, or be in a committed relationship regardless of sex or sexual preference.  My parents would disagree, my upbringing would disagree, but in my mind and to my knowledge, I am the judge and jury of no man.  Only God is.  So – let ’em have at it.  Who am I to say?
