Ninasusan

Happiness gently landed on my shoulders

Nina Susan I didn’t actually really know my name

I found out tonight that my name is Nina Susan.  I checked my birth certificate.  It is nice to know what my name is.  As the story is told, I’m named after my two grandmothers.  Maternal side Nina with the long i..mine is Nina pronounced Neena and the Sue from my paternal grandmother.  I actually knew my dad’s mother.  She went by Susie..all of the mail, all of the geneology records and her gravestone lists her as Susie.

Susie M Green

But MY MOTHER says her name was Susan…

As a child, my mother would call me Nina Susan when she was angry, but for the most part, she and everyone else in my family called me Nina Sue.  At some point in my life, my mother told me my name was Nina Sue…which I thought made more sense… Nina Susie sounded wierd and only mother called me Nina Susan.  I was confused…Jenny asked me one day what my name really was and I didn’t know.  I DID NOT KNOW WHAT MY REAL NAME WAS.  I thought several times about getting into the personal paper box to look up my birth certificate but just never got around to it…until tonight.

I’m Nina Susan….and Grandma Green will be known for eternity as Susie.  My family – what is left of them – will probably still call me Nina Sue but my name is Nina Susan….There is a peace that comes with the answer.

Until next time….

  1. Thanks for sharing your story.  My father was called Cameron all of his life, but when he went to get a passport, he found out that on his birth certificate he was listed as Boy Stanton. He had to legally change his name to Cameron.

  3. My name is Mary Beth.  At least that was what I was told. Apparently, my mom wanted my name to Mary Beth first name but the nuns wouldn’t write it down that way.  So on my birth certificate It appears as first name Mary and middle name Beth. My Mom always insisted that I was Mary Beth and that is what I always go by.  I use my maiden name as my middle name.Glad you now know.

  6. A much more colorful story than my own. I was named after the song playing on the hospital radio. Thank goodness that my great-grandfather was there to give me my nickname. I love my nickname. Thank for sharing your story, it brought back a lot of memories for me.

  7. Hey I know how you felt.   I thought my middle name was spelt the way that your suppose to spell it …darn doctor didn’t know how to spell it (my mother blammed the doctor) but I think it was all my mothers fault.  Oh well, I never use it, never like it.
