I worked 10p to 2a tonight.  Doing it all 3 of my days off.  With Sherri gone, there is an unbelievable need for operators to work overtime.  I don’t mind working the 4 hour shifts..almost seems like nothing compared to 8 hours..although when I go back to a regular shift Tuesday night, the time between 2a and 7a will probably be endless.

Finally and I mean FINALLY got my wireless router hooked up tonight…it just would not work so I borrowed one from Brian at work…it was a cheap one and it just did not work very well.  When I was using the laptop, no one could use the desktop.  I printed off set-up instructions from the internet instead of using the disk that came with it and what a difference…obviously.

Everyone is sacked out here so guess I will go upstairs to read and drift off to sleep.

Until next time….

Actual 911 call

While going thru a box of “funnies”, I found this call I had typed out from 1998

Me:     911 What is your emergency

Mr.      I just woke up and I think my wife is gone

Me:      Sir, do you think she has passed away?

Mr.      I don’t know

Me:      Is she breathing

Mr.      I don’t know I”m in a walker, I just got out of the hsopital and I can’t get to her

Me:      Is there anyone there with you

Mr.      Just the dog

Me:      Sir, I have an ambulance on the way

Ambulance arrives on scene and reports that there is no pickup.  The wife is gone….she went for a walk.

I took a nap this afternoon and that absolutely gorgeous vet called my cell phone…Kate talked to him.  Sierra has nothing but a fatty tumor with lots of red blood cells and he says we will just keep an eye on it for now.  Whew…the mother of the brood is going to be okay…..

Katy’s flight was cancelled this evening so she won’t be flying out until AM…she was all ready to go = physically and mentally.

Until next time….

Kate made it home just fine…it’s like she hasn’t been gone at all.. Stopped in to pick up “his” prescription tonight and an early 20 something clerk made a joke and I couldn’t tell if it was a 20 year old to 20 year old joke or a 20 year old to what she thought was a teenager still in high school joke.  While we were walking out of the store, I was watching her and couldn’t figure out if she looked almost 21 or like she was in high school…I can only see her as Katy…wierd step back into my motherhood psychy.

“His” foot surgery went well…his tendon was snipped and she popped off a heel spur…he’s on vicodin and very happy.  He and Katy are watching a Harry Potter movie..I”m guessing he will have no recollection….

I work MY first midnight tonight – that sounds so nice.  My midnight for as long as I want them…whew…been a long time coming.

I’ll check in tomorrow….we’ll see if I’m as excited an optimistic after being up all night 🙂

Until next time….

Took Sierra to the vet for her shots today when we picked Benny up  from his emasculation…Sierra has a lump on her hind end just above her tail…Doc did a needle aspiration.  I’m not going to freak here…he says it is possible that it is a fatty tumor although it is quite hard??  X ray showed no bone connection?  One day at a time.  Benny is fine.  I think he’s just happy to have all that hormone stuff out of the way.

Stopped at Kims to get dog food and was introduced to her new baby…a sphynx cat.  Strange little creatures…she’s going to raise them…very sweet.

Watched the Osmonds again on PBS…I’m just a bit obsessed…girls, if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all…you know who you are 🙂

Until next time….

I made a connection :)

We went to look at a townhouse with Tom and Rhonda last night.  They are “hanging from the chandelier” crazy and want to get out of the apartment and they also want to get a Beagle.  They are doggie people and don’t feel complete without a canine companion.  Anyway…the real estate agent (who I already knew lived with our doc) was pointing out where her grandparent’s lived from the townhouse she was showing us so I said….who are your grandparents…I must take a step back here.  The town we were in is a very small town west of Newton but where “his” mother’s family is from.  It is also the town where my friend and roommate, Gena is from … Gena introduced “he” and I one night in this small town…anyway…She told us who they were and the connection was made.  Not only did she know “his” entire family but their grandmothers had been pals and she had been to “his” house when they were small….there is about a 9 year difference in their age but she has brothers and sisters he knew.  I love to make these connections.

Benny is at the vet today being neutered…we didn’t tell him …. he was loud enough meowing on the way in.  Hopefully having his male parts detached will help a lot of his problems…hahahaha and I’ll just leave alone any other thoughts that just popped into my head about neutering and world peace.

Have a great day, everbody!!!!

No life until the obituary

My friend, Rod, who works in the jail always makes fun of me…during discussions I always want to find out about people; I always ask questions…I’m very curious about people…what makes them tick.  As an example, one day Rod was telling me about his mother’s sister…I asked what her name was – who she was married to and what was her maiden name…I’m curious…I want to make a connection…it has happened so many times that I find out that there are connections…I know somebody connected to them or something.  I don’t see why this is a problem unless people think I’m too nosey..I hope that is not the case…I don’t ask personal questions like their weight or sexual preference I simply want to know about people…. that leads me to the next paragraph.

This morning, Jenny sent me an obituary from the newspaper, it is the obituary of a neighbor at their previous house.  This sweet old guy was obviously an alzheimers patient.  When the kids were outside, they would take Marshall, the german shepherd, with them and many times the old guy would come out of the house and walk over to the fense and throw balls and sticks for Marshall…I always had a lump in my throat for him mainly because of the alzheimers but because there was something that made some type of connection with Marshall and throwing a stick….

Here is an excerpt from his obit:
In preparation for a commission in the U.S. Navy, Noel attended Central College in Pella and Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. After two years of naval service, he continued his education at Iowa State University and began a 38 year career with the Maytag Corporation in 1948 as a tool design engineer.

Noel was a generous and engaged man with a quick wit and smile. He was eager to help family and friends – and those who had not yet become his friend. Noel loved to visit and would often turn a short errand into a long conversation with an old or new friend. Noel attended First Assembly of God Church in Newton, where he taught Sunday school and was a leader of the Royal Rangers. Noel was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis, the Maytag Management Club, and taught Eagle Scouts. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed many outdoor activities including hiking, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed traveling and often added to his collection of antique hand tools on trips with Lois. Noel was a committed tinkerer and was often in front of his workbench on a new woodworking or fix-it project.

He died the same year he would have celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary.  Wouldn’t it have been great to know these things about Noel when he was alive.  I am going to continue asking questions because I really don’t need to know how great someone is after they are dead…I want to really know about them while they are alive.

I dedicate this weblog entry to the life of Noel Decker

Happy Birthday, Nina Sue

If I’m going to air the bad…I also must share the good.  Went to mom’s tonight for cake and ice cream…Aunt Frances had Hyvee (the grocery store for you non-iowans) deliver a birthday cake and ice cream when they delivered groceries.  Also Dana (who works for them 3 x a week and also is the daughter of an old friend of mine) did some birthday shopping…it was a very nice evening…Aunt Frances and Helen bickered a few times but Aunt Frances tried not to take the bait..  We had a nice visit and I was not even on my guard…I just relaxed…whew.

Phil took me to Des Moines for dinner – Felix and Oscars – a local restaurant that serves Chicago style pizza.  The restaurant has been around all of my adult life and probably before that…then we went to PetSmart and Petco..bought this awesome pee pit for the cats…it is a litter box with a cover that you roll over and all the “stuff” is in a drawer and then you just have to dump the little drawer…I’m impressed.  Also got a perch to put in front of the windows…was fun…got the pups a squeaky toy…it drives Sierra nuts and she won’t let anyone play with it.  She stands over it and growls when anyone gets close…

That’s it from the looney zoo tonight….

THE CAT’S DIARY:

Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects and some sort of powerful mind-altering drug that they have securely place into a small clothed thing they refer to as a “toy.” But I am strong and will resist to the bitter end if necessary, even though its deadly aroma truly drives me mad. The captors also dine lavishly on fresh meat while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations they feed me perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit a hair ball on their precious white living room carpet. Today, I also decapitated a mouse and dropped its he adless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear in their hearts since it clearly demonstrates my superior capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I was.

Bastards! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my untimely confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage when I finally break out of this 2-legged run prison.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around her feet as she tried to walk by. I must try this again tomorrow, but this time at the top of the stairs. If that fails again, I will be forced to try another measure of attack by curling up around her breathing holes when she lays down on her comfortable sleeping platform at darkness. My success a few moons ago was unfortunately cut short due to my captor rising suddenly due to the dog voicing his concerns over a fellow feline who roams freely outside the prison walls and digs in our trash containers. I must find a way to silence the dog during the next darkness time.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges; he is regularly released and seems to be more than willing to return.  He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move to them. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell so he is safe, but only for now.
